Mozambique cyclone death toll rises to 16. [File, Standard]

The death toll from Cyclone Jude that hit northern Mozambique last week has risen to at least 16 people, according to a new toll released on Saturday by the national Institute of Meteorology.

At least two people are still missing and nearly 60 have been injured, it said.

Cyclone Jude hit the country's Indian Ocean coast on Monday, bringing winds of up to 195 kilometres (more than 120 miles) an hour and more than 250mm (10 inches) of rain over 24 hours, the National Institute of Meteorology said.

It is the third cyclone to strike impoverished Mozambique in four months.

In December, Cyclone Chido struck the Portuguese-speaking country, causing the deaths of at least 120 people and destroying almost 120,000 homes, according to official data.
