Moi University announces layoffs amid financial struggles

Moi University has formerly announced layoffs, citing financial constraints caused by declining student enrollment.  

In a notice issued Wednesday, Acting Vice-Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut said the university has experienced a drop in revenue, making it difficult to meet its financial obligations.  

“We hereby give formal notice of an intention to declare redundancy affecting several employees who are members of your union. This decision has been necessitated by a reduction in revenue due to a decline in student numbers,” Kotut said.  

He noted that persistent financial challenges have made it difficult for the university to sustain operations and pay employee salaries.  

The university has indicated they have begun consultations with affected employees and their union representatives, as required by law and the UASU Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). 

“As a result, we are compelled to review our operations and adjust the workforce accordingly to ensure the university’s sustainability. During the notice period, we will engage in consultations with affected employees and their union representatives, in accordance with the law and the UASU CBA,” he said.  

Moi University said it is exploring alternatives to minimize job losses, including possible redeployment or reassignment to alternative roles, in compliance with employment regulations.  

Affected employees will receive severance pay, a salary in place of notice, payment for accrued leave days, and any other outstanding benefits.  

The institution said details on the affected employees and the redundancy timeline would be communicated in due course.  

The layoffs come as Moi University grapples with financial difficulties and an ongoing lecturers' strike that has disrupted learning in recent months.
